Frequently asked questions
What is Chiropractic all about?
To be optimally healthy you need great communication between your brain and all areas of your body. We believe subluxations interfere with this communication resulting in varying degrees of less than optimal health. Chiropractic adjustments aim to restore this communication and in turn restore optimal health. Your brain sends and receives messages to all parts of your body including your muscles, joints and organs. When you have a subluxation, a joint is not functioning as it should whereby it sends incorrect information to the brain. These incorrect messages can result in parts of your brain getting confused and sending back further incorrect messages to other associated areas. A chiropractic adjustment restores the correct communication to the brain and allows the brain to reset and begin sending better communication to the rest of the body again. To function well in health, your brain and all parts of your body require regular and correct two-way communication. Chiropractic care detects any loss of optimal communication and adjustments aim to restore this communication and balance. |
Why do I need to come back?
You don't! However, just like keeping your car well maintained, we believe your body will work better if it is regularly "tuned" by a professional. Are you in need of a grease and oil change?

Do you see kids?
Absolutely! Both our chiropractors are confident in looking after children. We consider it a great honour to have parents place their trust in us at such a special time in the lives of both the new parents and babies. Call us now to book an appointment for your precious bundle of joy

What is Gonstead Chiropractic?
The Gonstead Method focuses on being as specific as possible with the examination and treatment of the subluxation. The examination includes taking a detailed history, instrumentation, static and motion palpation, neurological testing and, when relevant, full spine xrays taken in the standing, weight bearing position.
It is the functional examination that determines whether or not a patient has a subluxation and the information of the assessment is then applied to the xray to determine the best manner in which to treat the condition. Treatment is performed by administering a very specific manipulation called an adjustment.
The goal of the Gonstead practitioner is to "do the least to achieve the most". This means to find the subluxations causing the greatest impact, adjust those then allow the body to heal itself. We find this tends to give the longest lasting results and enhances a strong, self healing nervous system and therefore body in general.

Why does it keep going out?
We are not 100% sure however this is how we see it based on both the research and years of chiropractic care all around the world.
Consider your spine to be like a fuse box. When an electrical circuit gets overloaded, a fuse "blows". Your nervous system works in a similar way. If your nervous system becomes overloaded by stress, it "goes out" or, in chiropractic speak, subluxates. When a fuse blows or your body subluxates, the circuit no longer works like it should. Also just like a fuse, the nervous system needs to be reset before the circuit can again work optimally. Your chiropractor checks for the signs of potential nervous system overload (subluxations and potential subluxations) and resets the "fuses" when necessary.
Potential stresses to the nervous system may be broken up into the following three categories: Trauma, Toxins and Thoughts. Trauma includes falls, car accidents and even recurrent micro traumas like poor posture and recurrent overuse. Toxins range from preservatives in food, tobacco and other types of smoke and air pollutants to herbicides and pesticides. Thoughts refers to negative thinking, anger, blame, hatred and other negative emotions as these have been found to produce quite dangerous toxins within the body of the person feeling this way. For more information on these three stresses, please feel free to contact us and we would be more than happy to supply you with a more in depth document.

What can I do to help myself?
Health advice should always be tailored to your individual needs whereby it is important that you speak to your health care practitioner to determine which solutions are best for you. The following are a couple of general suggestions followed by some printable handouts. These handouts show some favourite exercises specific to certain common complaints. Please keep in mind that the exercises are only useful when performed using correct technique and can cause injury if performed incorrectly. If you intend to begin this work out, please have your health care practitioner check your technique to avoid injury.
Keep in mind that in the words of Aristotle:
"Practice does not make perfect, it makes permanent."

- Wherever possible eat fresh and pure foods. (Organic / biodynamic is even better still)
- Avoid stress and learn to manage it wherever it is unavoidable. Techniques include meditation, yoga, chi gong, doing something you love, taking "me time" and for those having a harder time learning to relax - hypnotherapy or bio feedback techniques. One of the cheapest and easiest methods is to just sit upright and take a few long, deep breaths while you concentrate only on your breathing.
- Use correct lifting techniques.
- Perform 30mins of moderate exercise per day.
- Laugh often - it reduces stress, releases endorphins, helps relieve muscle tension and uses a wide variety of muscles while opening the airways.
Why should I have regular check ups?
Your body works a lot like a car although it is even more complicated and intricate. It is important to get your car serviced regularly so why not your body - it doesn't even get a chance to switch off and "cool down". With your body, if you choose to wait until the red lights stays up on the dash, the damage may already be starting. It is also possible for you to overlook the red lights as "I must not have had enough water" or "maybe I just slept funny" or any other of an infinite number of excuses we make for why the red light may be flashing up on the dash from time to time. We suggest you come in when the red light first flashes up rather than waiting for it to stay on permanently before you see to it.
Your nervous system controls the flow of information throughout your entire body. Chiropractors are able to detect subtle changes that may signal this information is not being transmitted accurately, is being sent more often than is ideal or is not being sent at all. These changes can usually be adjusted with a minimum of fuss and full functioning can be returned.
