Completing regular exercise is essential for just about everyone. The benefits of regular physical activity are wide and varied and include weight control, reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, reduced risk of almost all cancers, reduced risk of diabetes, manages and reduces stress, improves mental health and mood, strengthens muscles and bones and just generally increases your chances of living a longer healthier life! So if you're looking for a simple and easy way to boost your overall fitness and get some great results from your workout routine, look no further than performing squatting exercises. Here’s why… 1. Squats are super easy and anyone can do them! Squats don’t require any equipment and can be done anywhere from the home, to the office, to the gym. As people become more confident and advanced they may choose to add in weights and do their squats under load, but doing body weighted squats alone is a terrific work out and a great place to start. 2. Squats are functional Functional exercises use multiple muscles and joints at the same time in one singular movement. These exercises improve not only strength but also improve balance, endurance, posture, coordination, flexibility and agility. 3. Functional Exercise Make Real-Life Easier Functional exercises are movements that you use in every day life. Squats are one of the best functional exercises out there as humans have been squatting since the hunter-gatherer days. When you perform squats, you build muscle and help your muscles work more efficiently, as well as promote mobility and balance. All of these benefits translate into your body moving more efficiently in the real world too. Think of an elderly person struggling to get in or out of their chair, squats are almost an identical movement and it’s never to late to start. 4. Builds muscle and strength in your entire body Squats obviously help to build your leg muscles (including your quadriceps, hamstrings, and calves), but what most people don’t know is that they also create an anabolic environment, which promotes body-wide muscle building. In fact, when done properly, squats and other total body exercises are powerful stimulators for muscle-building hormones like testosterone and growth hormone. These hormones are essential for muscle growth and will also help to improve muscle mass when you train other areas of your body aside from your legs. 5. Flexibility By moving your body through a full range of motion, you’ll not only build strength but you will boost flexibility as well. Deep squatting helps to increase range of motion in the entire hip complex as well as ankle and back flexibility. The benefit: reduced likelihood of back pain and an easier time getting around in daily activities, weather it be on the sporting field, in the work place, or in the back yard with the kids. ~Aaron Image from: http://christinamichele.com/archives/2215
